In this workshop the participants were also directly involved in practicing how to create new works and simple arrangements as the output of this workshop. Even though it only lasted for one day, at the end of this workshop, it was able to produce a new collaborative work that highlighted elements of traditional Kalimantan, Mandailing, Toba and Malay music.
FIB USU PR - On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the Ethnomusicology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held a workshop entitled "New Musical Works Based on Tradition". The workshop presented Tengku Ryo Rizqan, B.Mus.Ed who was recently involved as a Practitioner Lecturer in the Ethnomusicology Study Program as a resource person. Tengku Ryo is a violinist who is quite experienced in Western classical music as well as Malay music and has experience in various music festivals at home and abroad.
A number of awards have been won, such as the Tunak Anugerah (Malay music reformer) from the Dumai Malay Cultural Council, Riau 2010 and the International Male Artiste Award, 6th CHT International Award, KualaLumpur Malaysia 2017. The workshop took place at Studio Fl. 2 The Ethnomusicology Study Program was attended by twenty eight participants.
This workshop activity was opened by Vice Dean III Muhammad Pujiono, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., who really welcomed the holding of this workshop. Furthermore, in his remarks, the Head of the Ethnomusicology Study Program who also acted as moderator, Dra. Rithaony Hutajulu, M.A. said that the aim of holding this workshop was in line with the profile of ethnomusicology graduates which includes applied ethnomusicology. It is hoped that students will be able to explore the richness of traditional music from the nusantara, especially North Sumatra, into new musical works.
Starting by conveying the experiences of the speakers regarding various explorations of traditional music, especially North Sumatra, the workshop continued with demonstrations of musical games and screenings of examples of works from a number of composers from North Sumatra such as the world music group Suarasama, Vicky Sianipar and the works of Tengku Ryo himself.
